Anti-smog guns are now the most visible piece of dust-control equipment on any Delhi NCR construction site. Walk past any major project in Gurugram or Noida and you will see at least one — but pick the wrong throw distance for your plot and you have spent ₹2–5 lakh on equipment that still earns you a DPCC notice.

What an anti-smog gun actually does
An anti-smog gun is essentially a high-pressure water cannon with an atomising nozzle that breaks water into fine droplets (typically 50–200 microns). The droplets bond with airborne PM2.5 and PM10 particles, weighing them down and pulling them out of suspension. Effective coverage is a cone of mist extending the rated throw distance from the nozzle.
DPCC sizing rule of thumb
DPCC's SOP ties throw distance to plot area:
- Up to 1,000 sqm — single 30 m throw gun, 500–1,000 L tank

Throw distance — what each rating really means
30 m throw
Compact unit, typically 7.5–15 HP motor, water consumption 30–60 litres per minute. Suitable for builder floors, small commercial sites and as a secondary unit for blind spots. Single-phase electric power is enough.
50 m throw
Mid-range workhorse, 22–30 HP motor, 80–120 LPM water consumption. The sweet spot for most NCR builder floor and group housing sites. Three-phase electric power preferred; can run on a DG set.
100 m+ throw
Heavy-duty unit, 40–75 HP motor, 200+ LPM water consumption. Usually trolley-mounted for repositioning, often diesel-engine driven so it does not depend on site power. Required for high-rise tower construction and large slum-rehabilitation projects.
Tank capacity matters as much as throw distance
An undersized water tank means the gun runs out mid-shift, and that is exactly when an inspector tends to arrive. Match tank capacity to at least 4 hours of continuous spraying at the gun's rated flow rate. For 50 m guns this works out to around 2,000 L; for 100 m guns at least 5,000 L.
Power, water and operator requirements
Power: 30 m guns run on single-phase 220 V; 50 m on three-phase 415 V; 100 m typically diesel. Water: a permanent borewell or tanker arrangement supplying at least double the gun's flow rate. Operator: one trained operator per gun on each shift, with a laminated SOP at the gun and a logbook entry every hour.
Rental vs outright purchase
For projects under 9 months, rental almost always wins. For projects beyond 18 months, outright purchase recovers in 12–14 months and the gun retains 40–50% resale value. The break-even sits in the 9–18 month window where the right choice depends on whether you have a steady pipeline of future projects.
Total cost of ownership in 2026
- 30 m gun — rental ₹15,000–25,000/month; purchase ₹1.8–2.5 L
- 50 m gun — rental ₹35,000–50,000/month; purchase ₹3.5–5 L
- 100 m gun — rental ₹75,000–1.2 L/month; purchase ₹8–14 L
Add 10–15% for operator wages, water cost and quarterly preventive maintenance. Diesel running cost for 100 m units is the biggest variable — at 5–7 litres per hour, an 8-hour shift adds ₹3,500–5,000 per day in fuel.

- Buying a 100 m gun for a 1,000 sqm site — overkill, wastes water and money
- Renting a 30 m gun for a 3,000 sqm site — guaranteed DPCC notice
- No tank — relying on borewell pressure directly often starves the gun
- Single-operator overload — one operator managing two distant guns leads to long downtime
- Buying without service contract — these are mechanical machines, breakdowns are routine
How to verify your gun is actually DPCC-compliant
Ask the supplier for the OEM data sheet showing throw distance under standard conditions, the motor power rating, water flow rate and nozzle atomisation spec. Cross-check throw distance with a real-world spray test on delivery — manufacturer claims and real coverage often differ in dry, hot NCR conditions by 10–20%.
