AQI Sensor Buying Guide 2026 — What DPCC Actually Approves at Construction Sites
A practical, no-jargon buying guide for construction-grade AQI sensors that DPCC and HSPCB will actually accept — CPCB listing, PM2.5/PM10 accuracy, mounting height, API push and pricing in 2026.
Every week a builder calls us after buying a ₹15,000 indoor air-quality display off a marketplace and being told by the DPCC zonal officer that it does not count. The AQI sensor is one of the three items officers look at first during inspection — get it wrong and the rest of your compliance stack is irrelevant.
This guide is written from installing sensors at over ninety Delhi NCR sites since 2020. It covers only what actually matters when DPCC or HSPCB is standing at your gate — not the marketing brochure.
What DPCC actually checks
Officers do not open a spec sheet. They open the DPCC portal on their phone, search your site by acknowledgement number, and check whether live PM2.5 and PM10 readings are pushing in the last 15 minutes. If the graph is flat or offline, the sensor fails inspection regardless of brand.
- Sensor listed on the CPCB approved-vendor list (mandatory)
- PM2.5 and PM10 measurement — TSP alone is not accepted
- Data push to DPCC / HSPCB central API at 15-minute intervals
- Mounting height 3–4 metres, minimum 3m clearance from tall obstacles

The three sensor grades you will see quoted
Vendors will pitch you three tiers. Understand what each is really for before you sign.
- Indoor air-quality monitors (₹8k–20k) — not accepted at construction sites; skip entirely
- Outdoor low-cost PM sensors (₹35k–70k) — acceptable for small sites if CPCB-listed with proper enclosure and API push
- CAAQMS-grade beta-attenuation units (₹6L+) — required only for red-category industries and very large sites
For 1,000–5,000 sqm construction sites, tier 2 is the sweet spot. Anything cheaper will fail inspection; anything costlier is capex you do not need.
Non-negotiable technical specs
- PM2.5 range 0–1,000 µg/m³, resolution 1 µg/m³
- PM10 range 0–2,000 µg/m³
- Accuracy ±10% vs reference-grade instruments
- Operating temperature 0–50°C (Delhi summers hit 47°C in the sun)
- IP65 or better enclosure with sun-shade
- 4G modem with SIM slot (Wi-Fi is unreliable on active sites)
- Local storage for 30 days if uplink drops
Installation mistakes we see every month
The equipment is rarely the problem — installation is. A CPCB-listed sensor mounted incorrectly fails as reliably as an unapproved unit.
- Mounted below 3m — readings biased by ground dust and rejected
- Placed next to the anti-smog gun spray zone — humidity kills the optical chamber
- No lightning arrestor — one monsoon strike takes out the modem
- SIM in the project manager's personal name — number ports and data stops
- No anti-theft cage — sensors walk off sites, especially in year-1 projects
What you should be paying in 2026
A properly installed CPCB-listed outdoor PM2.5/PM10 sensor with 4G uplink, DPCC API integration, anti-theft cage, solar backup and one year of AMC lands between ₹85,000 and ₹1,25,000 in Delhi NCR. Anything materially below that is either non-compliant hardware or missing integration work — check the invoice against the CPCB list before you pay.
AMC — the part vendors do not mention
Optical sensors drift. Without quarterly cleaning and annual calibration against a reference instrument, readings gradually diverge and portal uptime deteriorates. Budget ₹8,000–12,000 per year for AMC, or expect to fail an inspection in year two.
Frequently asked questions
Which brands does DPCC actually accept?
DPCC does not endorse specific brands. It accepts any sensor on the current CPCB approved-vendor list that pushes data to the DPCC API. Ask your vendor for the model number and cross-check it on cpcb.nic.in before purchase.
Can I use one sensor for two adjacent sites?
No. Each DPCC acknowledgement number needs its own sensor pushing to the portal — even for adjacent plots under the same developer.
Do I need a separate CO/NO2/SO2 sensor?
For construction sites, PM2.5 and PM10 are mandatory. Gas sensors are required only for specific industrial red-category categories, not building projects.
What is the minimum sensor uptime DPCC accepts?
There is no hard-coded threshold, but sustained uptime below 90% typically triggers a show-cause notice. Aim for 95%+ with a solar-backed power supply.
